Features
Windows AI Copilot: The biggest new feature Microsoft is shipping in the 23H2 version update is a new AI assistant called “Windows Copilot,” which uses the same technology as Bing Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot to help users be more productive by understanding complex commands, instructions, and context.
New File Explorer: Microsoft is rolling out a major update to its File Explorer app on Windows 11, bringing a more modern interface and a redesigned “header UI” that’s more similar to what you’d find in a web browser. The app’s centerpiece is the tabs, and below that are the forward, back, and home buttons next to the address bar and search box.
Windows Backup: Microsoft is finally bringing a cloud backup tool to version 23H2 that makes it easy to back up your settings, files, and apps to your OneDrive storage for easy restoration when setting up a new PC for the first time. When signed into their Microsoft account, users will be prompted to restore from their previous PC and bring all their settings and apps with them in just a few clicks.
Taskbar Ungrouping: The classic taskbar feature is back in the form of app labels and ungrouping! This feature was available in Windows 7 to Windows 10 but was removed when Microsoft created the new taskbar for Windows 11.
New Volume Mixer: Microsoft is updating the volume mixer to make it more useful when adjusting the volume of certain apps. Starting with this update, users can use the Windows 11 Quick Settings panel to manually adjust the volume of each app that plays audio.
7Zip RAR Support: Microsoft is finally bringing support for 7zip and RAR to Windows 11, meaning you no longer need to download third-party tools to handle those archive file types. Windows will be able to easily unzip and zip 7zip and RAR files, as well as .tar and other open source archive formats.
in-Box RGB Peripheral Customization: Gamers rejoice as Microsoft builds RGB peripheral controls directly into the Windows 11 Settings app. This means users can customize the RGB settings on their keyboards, mice, monitors, and other devices and accessories without having to download third-party software.
Paint gets a big upgrade: Microsoft introduced dark mode in Paint alongside the original 2021 release, but it hasn’t shipped yet. The app also features updated zoom functionality, with an expanded drop-down menu with customizable percentages and smoother zoom.
Widgets Board Updates: This feature update is expected to bring more customization options for boards, including a new layout that allows users to choose between having widgets separated from the news feed, mixed with the news feed, and no news feed at all.
Windows Dev Drive / Dev Home: If you’re a developer, Windows 11 is improving with version 23H2, which introduces a new Dev Home app designed to make setting up a new dev machine as easy as possible, while also giving you an overview of your machine, your GitHub projects, and more. Dev Home can connect to your GitHub account and pull in the latest changes and requests. There are also a number of system monitoring widgets that can be added to the Dev Home app or the widget board. These widgets include CPU, GPU, Memory, and Network.
